Wildfires in New Mexico

Lots of things have happened since our last update. There have been two large wildfires in New Mexico recently. The first fire in Los Alamos burned thousands of acres of forestland and left many people homeless. The second fire started about six miles northeast of Pecos and was contained after burning 26,000 acres of forestland.  Since our property is three miles east of Pecos, we were extremely concerned when we first heard the news.

We were very fortunate that the fire missed our property completely!

Needless to say, we continue to be concerned about the dry conditions in Northern New Mexico. There has been some rain in the past week, which has helped considerably. We are also working with several local agencies to learn what fire protection techniques we can use to lower risks to the land and eventually the homes in our community. One of the most important things we have done is entered into preliminary discussions with the Village of Pecos about having a Fire Substation on Bird's property. We are also going to build a firebreak along the perimeter of the land and eventually around the homes in the community. We will also continue to research other areas such as permaculture landscaping techniques and straw bale construction (believe it or not, straw bales don't burn very well)!!

APPROVAL AND PRICING LOTS ARE OUR PRIORITY!!

Since being tabled for another month at the last planning and zoning meeting, I have personally taken over the process of working with the State and County agencies. We have received responses from a majority of the State agencies and they are very positive about the project! The Mayor of Pecos supports our community and will attend the next meeting of the planning and zoning committee. We should be able to set a date some time next week for the p &z meeting.

We are still diligently working towards having lot prices available in the next week or two! We must wait to hear if our preliminary proposed lot sizes are acceptable to the State Environment Agency. We are also pricing everything that would be included with a lot/home purchase in the community, such as a community center, utilities and septic systems, roads, trails and parks.
