The June Supreme Court ruling

my dog

Wow... it seems that same-sex marriages are moving forward surprisingly quickly since the Supreme Court made their ruling in June! Minnesota, my home state, was number 13 to legalize gay marriage and my current state... New Mexico... is issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples county by county with six counties so far, including San Miguel County, which is where Birds of a Feather Community is located! Let's keep the momentum going in New Mexico and everywhere!

It has been a great summer weather-wise for us. We have had the good fortune of having many afternoon rain showers... our “monsoon season” as the locals call the rainy season here. And, of course, the sun shines here an average of 320 days a year, so mornings have been mostly sunny... a perfect combination! Nights have been in the 50's, which is great for sleeping. And, coming from Minnesota... I certainly don't miss the mosquitoes. We do have them, but I can't remember the last time I saw one, or swatted at one, while sitting out on my back portal in the evening.

The rain has also helped our wildflowers and native grasses to pop up everywhere on Birds' property this summer. It is very green and beautiful here with an abundance of sunflowers! I'll be posting some new photos soon of the property and also our BIG four birthday bash celebration that we had in June... a fun time was had by all!

On a sad note, I lost my beloved companion, Skye, my almost thirteen year old, Australian Shepherd, in July. I'm sure many of you have seen photos of her on my website or even may have had the pleasure of meeting her while visiting us for a tour! Skye was just a pup when we moved from Minnesota to New Mexico in 2001, to begin the development of Birds of a Feather Community on the 160 acre property that I purchased in 1999. We explored and hiked the entire property together for so many years, that it seems so foreign to me now to hike it without Skye beside me.

I have kept busy with showings/tours this summer and have several more scheduled for this fall, but would love to have even more of you visit. Fall is a great time to come to New Mexico. One of our biggest attractions is the International Balloon Fiesta held in Albuquerque from October 5th to 13th this year. Visitors and photographers from all over the world come to the fiesta to see hot air balloons of all shapes and colors launch into the sky. It is quite amazing to see and experience!

Birds of a Feather is also one of the proud sponsors of the Southwest's premier gay and lesbian film festival, which is also held in Albuquerque from October 11th to 20th.

If you are interested in visiting us and would like any assistance in arranging accommodations or getting more information about things to do in the area, please let me know... I'd be happy to help.

I'm really excited about our newest floor plan that we are calling our "Little House". It is 960 sq. ft. and perfect for couples interested in downsizing for retirement, singles or even a second home. It has one bedroom, an office/den, two baths and an open area for the dining room, living room and kitchen. Your choice of a single or double car garage. There is a covered portal and the option of a private deck for a hot tub or just relaxing off of the bedroom.

There are only four of our ¼ acre lots available for the Little Houses at this time. Since interest rates and housing prices have begin to rise recently, this may be a great time to reserve your future home in our community before they go any higher! Of course, we have other floor plans available for you to choose from or you may design your own custom home for one of our magnificent lots of up to 3+ acres! Please call or write for more information or to schedule a time to talk or visit us!
